Afghan Girl

Sharbat Gula, also known as "Afghan Girl," was born in 1972 in Afghanistan, a country in western Asia between Iran and Pakistan.

The photographer of this picture was a photographer for the magazine National Geographic named Steve McCurry.

This picture was taken in 1984, when Gula was living as a refugee in Pakistan (a country between Afghanistan and India) because the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Bombing by the Soviets killed her parents, forcing her, her grandmother, and her brothers and sisters to climb over the mountains into Pakistan to a refugee camp where they would be safe.

Gula started to go to school when she was in the refugee camp, but then dropped out and got married. She had four daughters, one of whom died when she was a baby. Gula's biggest hope for her daughters is that they get a better education than she was able to get.

In 2002, National Geographic did a search to find this girl again and see where she was and how she was doing. She had never before seen this picture that McCurry took of her, even though it was famous around the world.
